Picking up the peices

So I was listening to this song that's by a British artist and the whole song is about how she's dating this guy but he only sees his ex-girlfriend when he's with her and she doesn't know what to do. So I'm wondering if it's possible to be with someone but only see the previous person you were with and act like the person they're with is the other person.

  1. I completely think this is possible. If somebody has really fond memories of a previous relationship, it's natural to look for that again and impossible not to compare new relationships to the old. In their mind, I can imagine it would be possible to see a new girl/boyfriend as just a continuation of the old girl/boyfriend, even if just in hopes of having a relationship as good as the last.

  2. There's sort of a Gatsby reference waiting to happen here: the ideal version of a person once known is the sole reason for this singer's search for someone else to fill the void. Yet, nobody else seems to cut it. Again, why relationships are dangerous and should be avoided: they trap you in a vortex of illusion and leave a hole that will never be filled.
